Natural Environment Bill Submission Summary
Te Pūtaiao Trust has submitted evidence to support the Natural Environment Bill, advocating for stronger environmental monitoring and protection of New Zealand’s marine ecosystems, kaimoana, and the aquaculture industry. Our submission highlights the importance of baseline radiation monitoring for key isotopes such as iodine-129, cesium-137, cesium-134, and tritium.
We also note the development of a Māori-led screening tool designed to support hapū and iwi in assessing how proposed developments may impact customary rights, and to help connect developers with the correct iwi/hapū representatives. The tool is currently in the design and development stage, and funding is being sought to support ongoing labour and operational costs.
